I know you hear, “ greatest show ever” thrown around a lot. It’s impossible to pick one as even my favorite shows changes frequently. That being said, you can’t go wrong with this show. Great set list and audio quality is what you love from those 77 shows

Playin > The Wheel transition gave me goosebumps

I share a birthday with Hartford 77. Terrapin Station release. I have as of lately, dedicated some time to these ol tapes of Charlie Miller and Betty Cantor-Jackson (my idol in sound engineering) with my recent sound equipment purchase- so much I could say but Hartford always produces GD Excellence in my opinion!

The transition from Playing into Wheel is just velvety smooth gorgeousness. Only they could do it. When it went into Wheel, I let out a triumphant and joyous yell. What a show!

So many high spots in this show. So many good thing have already been said. But that Music... I really do wish it never stopped!

This was a decade before my 1st show at Alpine 87 (just a little note). When I first started listening to the Dead, in 86, I couldn't get my hands on enough of their tapes. All studio to start, until my 1st Alpine show when a guy in a neighboring tent traded me my 1st live bootleg tape from April of 84 THEN IT ALL BEGAN! I WAS HOOKED ON LIVE DEAD TAPES. I quickly evolved to taper by the next yr. I made good taper friends and picked this show up early on. A Betty Board, and instantly my best sounding, and most favorite Live show (or top 5) of all time. The 1st live Terrapin, best quality and best played (IMO) of all time. The debut of Estimated is also one of my all time favorite performances because of its most laid-back reggae feeling jams with a subtle taste of disco, as well. Every song in both sets has it's own distinct sound to it that sets it apart from most others. I agree with all the other reviews of this show and the quality of each of the songs. My other favs of this night was the chillaxed Help-Slip-Frank, and esp the Eyes->Phil Zone bass jam->Dancing that are the smoking highlights of the 2nd set and best pairing/segue way of these 2 tunes (in fact, IDT there is another show with a Eyes->Dancing that I know of?). I had 500+ live Dead shows in my collection by 95 and this Swing show was my best sounding, most top 5 fav of them all. Of course 1977 was a phenomenal yr for the band and you'd be hard pressed IMO to find a bad show from this yr. A zenith yr for the GD where they were at the top of their game. Simply put, there was no other band (at the time) like the Grateful Dead. (Then came PHISH, but THAT is a WHOLE nother category of bands that ONLY share the same type of fans and following, and free-form improv jam-bands as influenced by the GD) 💜&☮️Out

I hitchhiked about thirty miles from Arrowbear to see this show. It was so nice to be able to just walk up to the stage and cruise around where I wanted. I was thrilled to be able to see the guys (and girl) live. On my ride hitchhiking back, the driver got out of the car to help someone and the car started rolling backward down the highway. I leapt from the back seat and hit the brake pedal with my hand. A fun and exciting day all around. Scott

I LOVE Swing Aud. '77! This was the first show that opened up the 1977 treasure tour for me.The Sugaree is what opened my ears and mind to this wonderful year of touring. I tend always (daily) come back and listen to this gig. The sound is fantastic,the setlist ROCKS and the Band is feeling it in that golden shaft of light. God Bless The Grateful Dead and the thousands of people who took the time and care to go and record these gigs! I just love being able to google a date and a gig shows up. I recently tried this: I typed in 7\7\87 and cranked it up. Yup they were onto the # 7 being prevalent that day and KILLED IT!. They just do it right, the music, production, feel, marketplace in the lot the whole shebang. My kinda vibe. Peace and Love

I've always loved this show and gave away my tapes years ago. It was the first Terrapin I ever heard, while spun out on my friend's living room floor summer '88. Only years later did I learn it was the band's first Terrapin. This version will always give me chills. Wish I'd grabbed the most recent Dave's Picks before it went!

SO MANY insane things going on but Bobby dropping China Cat licks into the Franklin is mind blowing. WHOA

Well, not much more to be said about this show that hasn't been already said. Consummately tight, clean, and inspired performance by all members of the band. They definitely had benefited from the studio time spent recording Terrapin Station, not to mention a most-excellent year in 1976 coming off their hiatus. I've listened to this SBD many times, just refreshing my memory this morning. Their first concert presentation of Terrapin is one of their best, but also seems to serve as a "bright inspiration" which moved them to greater heights in the rest of the show. For instance, the very next song, "New, New Minglewood Blues," is absolutely smoking hot, with fierce and daring solos by Jerry. Probably my favorite version of all. I don't generally get too excited about TLEO, but this performance is not only smooth and mellow, but Jerry's solo is outstanding. Amazing how the guy could do something so extremely difficult (improvisation), spur of the moment, and make it sound so simple and planned. Anything but, of course. Just reminds me how Garcia was one in a million. And the Sugaree is relatively concise at 11 minutes, but among the all-time great versions, in my opinion and that of many others. I won't continue to gush, because others have done this in abundance on prior posts. But this show is a definite keeper, 5-stars.

Well, I rode high on a wave of musical bliss here! Though I lost the dog, and ate a bad snow-cone but survived to review this memorable performance. Aces for deal, Jerry rolled and Bob had his voice... Anyway, wonderful stuff, thanks for this excellent analogue recording, sounds fantastic through my system! Cheers fellow Deadhead, long live the memories and music!

This was my very last Dead Show... :( I got busy with other things... and moved on... Now that I'm a geezer, I'm makin' time for the things I love most- that would be the good old Grateful Dead...

First Estimated Prophet!! What a day, what a day.

If only archive still allowed you to download these shows. Some of my favorite dead. I love donna sorry to those who dont but shes a fire cracker you gotta love her antics on and off the stage.

Listening to these shows I try to listen to more of the west coast performances because I have noticed many of the East coast concerts have people talking during the songs. I think that people have a right to be excited, but people came to hear the show.I have also noticed that some of the reviewers are on disgraceful ego trips rather than being coherent enough to appreciate and comment on the music.
I wasn't at this particular show, but it is a great one and I can hear it from the start. No need to download... just enjoy as is. Peace, Love, and the Dead forever

I can only imagine sitting in the Swing, and hearing Terrapin for the first time--and as a show opener. Minds had to be blown. Keith really kills it this night. He seems to really lead the way on Terrapin. Phil and Bobby seem a bit lost on Terrapin, but Keith and Jerry deliver the goods. I can't think of another Terrapin where he plays so confidently and majestically. An overall killer show, one of the high points of the K&D years. What a grate one-- in my personal top 3 of 77.

Of all the SBDs and Betty Boards available, the original source is still the best sounding, to my ears anyway. Levels are much higher here with more instrument separation.

Truly love the freshness of this night where they seemed to be taping into a new sound that had the entire band excited. The entire crew is on and the singing is some of the best of the entire year. Playing-wise they are tight, experimenting and clean. Love Keith and Donna on this night and as many have mentioned Phil is in the Z and Jerry so melodic.
Looking forward to getting the 77 box set from late May, but not expecting any of those shows to be at this level. Hopefully, I'm wrong, but this night has some much to love.

I only saw the GD eight times - and The Dead once - so having this Archive resource is truly wonderful - I listen to the Shows from History almost every day.
The one thing I can't get my (dead)head around (and around) is the clamour to make shows downloadable. Why, in this age of smartphones and portable devices, do they need to be downloadable? The shows are easily accessible as they are - why the need to "own" it? Just enjoy it and move on to the other one. It's free - what more can be asked?

besides the guitar... everyone seems out of sync ?... little emotion, rather more of a structure and obedience... you can tell that they were trying to play the song.
but the recording is surprisingly good.
by the way, it seems like some slipped something into Phils ... water. or maybe he thought his bass wasnt plugged in and was over-compensating for it!??

Drove south from Santa Cruz with friends to see this show. Had never been to the Swing Auditorium. There was a palpable buzz all around the place. More Hell's Angels than I'd seen at any other Dead show (because it was San Bernadino, I guess).
I might have smoked a little, but I rarely got as high as many people did for these shows. I mention this simply to point out that my perceptions were not drug induced. From the first note it was pure magic; the energy, the huge, perfect sound with the deepest bottom I've ever heard, the astonishing musicianship.
I'm sure that a lot of the great energy came from the audience. Truly a legendary Dead/Audience mind meld. To this day, that live concert experience hasn't been equalled, even by the Dead.

How do I download these shows?

Not my favourite of the year but still great. Not only the first Terrapin (and Estimated) but they actually open the first set with it! What a great set opener - very daring to open up with a complicated tune they had never performed live before. Playing>Wheel>Playing is a definite highlight as is an excellent Eyes. I feel they lost a bit of energy towards the end and the Around and US Blues are a bit sluggish.

I totally dig the 5/8/77 show....but in my opinion this how trumps it by far. First of all the first terrapin and estimated. What more needs to be said. The boys we firing on all cylinders this night. I absolutely LOVE this show nthe setlist is great, the sound is great, it's just awesome. Inwish was old enough to have been there. Man the heads that were there got one he'll of a treat this night. If anyone wants copies of any shows email meat colonialsrv@aol.com.

The first Terrapin Station opens up the show and they play it excellent. A nice '77 Sugaree, always one of my favorites. The second set has a great Help On They Way>Slipknot!>Franklin's Tower. Great sound quailty and a beautiful show.

What can I say that's not already been said. Grate performance. Incredible sound quality. Give it a listen or download if you have the know how. Deadheads check out Ekoostik Hookah. Start with 6-30-07,10-19-07 and 3-28-08. They can't be compared to the Grateful Dead. No band can. However they have thier own sound and lots of great tunes.

Great performance to start off this big year. There are quite a few standout songs, and also some very interesting song combos. The 1st set closer Playin'>Wheel>Playin' is great, and then in the 2nd the Eyes>Dancin' combo is real hot. I love when Phil takes on a solo which he does here after the Eyes into Dancin'. This show is a personal fav of mine from '77.

We are all in debt to Betty Cantor for this recording. Along with 5-5-77 thru 5-9-77, this recording blow everything else out of the water. Nothing else even comes close to this recording:
1) captures the thick, rich bass of Phil Lesh
2) records the band in peak performance
3) awesome overall sound quality that every sound man dreams of
4) Several songs played for the first time
What more can be said? This IS the SH!T.
Did Betty not pay her 1987 storage unit rent on purpose? Without her screw-up, none of these tapes would have leaked to the public. Thank you, Betty!

Also, this is the only time I ever saw Phil do a distinct bass solo; during "Eyes of the World", of course. Those of you who saw them in '73-'74 may have, but after this, he pretty much stopped that. This is my third show, and believe it or not I actually think this was the weakest of my amazing first four, i.e. that's how great the other three were in my opinion! The best of these I think was the fourth one, namely at The Forum 1977/6/4 i.e. just prior to the more well known Winterland shows in June. The other two being the second of each of following the pairs: with "The Who" at Oakland Stadium 1976/10/10 and at L.A.'s Shrine Auditorium 1976/10/15!
The Swing was a strangely built building for a concert! (By the way it no longer exists because apparently a plane crashed into it after E.L.P., being the last band to play there shortly after Grateful Dead played there in Dec. '80; (which was also a great show, and the only one I ever passed out at, but that's another story)! (What the hell does E.L.P. have to do with it, nothing other than the coincidence which I explain below). The following if you'll bare with me, is some historical context of this show and as you know, it started a new era for the band, in addition to simply the new compositions that is, also new devices facilitating the new compositions etc.
Starting with what is simply weird about the Swing but of lesser significance, since it's only noticeably on the audience tape; I got from a fellow who recorded from "a" balcony. Why I saw "a" balcony is because, there were only balconies on either side, yet not in the back like most rectangular buildings, such as, for example, Winterland or the Oakland Aud. (Kiaser). Those had their long axis running to and from the stage.
The Swing on the other hand, was at a 90 degree angle to more common configuration, i.e. it's width was much longer than it's length from the stage towards the audience. Hence, the audience tape I had before the "Betty Board" came out, sounded very lopsided! Despite this, it had an uncut "Franklin's Tower" unlike the first board I got! However, unfortunately the fellow from whom I got my first board copy, was unwilling to let me do the dub it myself, yet he didn't pay enough attention to the contents of recordings were prior to copying it. So consequentially, I lost the intact audience "Franklin's Tower" having been recorded over with the board which was cut in "Franklin's Tower". So, I was relieved that it's been patched here!
What's more significant but not readily apparent, is the mention of "technical difficulties" by Bob Weir early in the first set; (not that equipment delays were very unusual but this one was unique). That is, here Steve Parish was rigging Garcia into a Moog synthesizer which Keith played ever so briefly!
One gets the distinct impression that Keith apparently disliked electric keyboards. This is understandable given how primitive synthesizers were at this early time! Moreover Billy K. was interviewed in B.A.M. magazine around the time of Brent's first show, stating there was room for improvement in the technology which came since obviously they used them extensively later on. How much did this have to do or not with Keith's eventual exit from the band? I did hear something when Brent came in the band, that they were looking for "more sustain", as can be produced with electric keyboards.
Other evidence for this is a show a Texas later this same year, but I wasn't in attendance so I can't say for sure yet Keith seems to have left the stage after very briefly playing an "electric" during the beginning of "Playin' in the Band"? (Perhaps it's not appropriate to characterize Keith in this way since at least the following year he played for example, at the outdoor show at my alma mater when I was a freshman, at U.C. Santa Barbara, an electric "Fender Rhodes" piano), as well as an organ on a few tunes during his first rehearsals in '71.
So, back to Garcia, who just started using the "Unity Gain" effects loop into his volume knob on his guitar five months prior to this, at the show the day before my first show (i.e. the 1st one with "The Who" at Oakland Stadium" 1976/10/9). Here at the Swing was the first use of the new "Mutron" envelope filter, (synthesizer-like device), which still at this early time apparently had to be piped through a Moog synthesizer, configured as such for this debut of "Estimated Prophet" yet it was odd to see Jerry plugged into Keith!
Now, I'm not saying Dead Heads in general feel as my personal friends at the time did who weren't too enthused by bands such as E.L.P. which among others used synthesizers extensively, however I was more open minded. I remember pointing out to my friend as Steve Parish was plugging Jerry into the Moog since we were up in the front of this $7.50 general admission concert.
The state of the art at the time was that synthesizers could only play a single note at a time i.e. monophonic, and only Keith Emerson at the time had a keyboard capable of polphony until later. Another coincidence, is that the only other famous professional guitarist that I ever saw play live using a "Travis Bean" guitar besides Jerry Garcia was Greg Lake, (Jerry's had a sticker on it saying "The enemy is listening"); not that that has anything to do with it but it is still true!
Some of you may remember around '89ish when briefly, (which I only saw once at The Forum in Inglewood, Ca.), Parish bring out a gray Stratocaster with a big box, (Roland Synthesizer?), attached to the bridge for Jerry to noodle on during the "Improvisation" section; (I refuse to call it "Space", since there is no air in outer space, hence no sound). I knew folks who felt this is one of the best early renditions of "Slipknot!" I myself am kind of bias, since it was the only one I saw before they brought it back out at Tempe, Ariz. in '83!

This is the DEAD AT THEIR BEST!! This show is a must have. Their Help>Slipknot>Franklin's is awesome, but listen to jerry in Eye's of the World, It's the world to hear. Keyboard is onother thing to listen for. Phil takes the Dead to a new relm with his bass.

I usually don't rate shows, but this particular event is absolutely amazing. From song to song, the Grateful Dead delivers. From the first live performance of Terrapin Station and Estimated Prophet to the stunning Playin>Wheel>Playin, as well as Help>Slipknot!, they were feelin' it more than usual this special night. A must for any fan.

This whole show is very special, but I felt like I needed to expound on the profound sickness that is Help/Slipknot! Great heebie geeblers!!! Jer is flippin' out, much to my satisfaction.

First Terrapin and Estimated ... That alone makes the show special. Excellent sound quality as well. Ranks way up there. My favorite is still 5-8-77 at Cornell because the second set is just sensational, but this '77 show is another gem. I first heard this one with a full head of fungus in 1985. The joy remains. During the experience, we decided to write down the words to Help on the Way. Still have the notebook, and the words are written down about 35 times, script, all caps, switching lines, backwards, different colors, different colors for each work, different colors for each letter in a pattern, you get the idea. What a trip.
The fun in this show never ends, just gets better.

Now it's my attempt to write a review like Dr. Flashback, as they say imitation is the highest form of flattery.
The boys leave nothing in their trucks when they step on stage at Swing. Jerry immediately pulls out his new song Terrapin Station. Much to the delight of the crowd but they have no idea what was played! But they loved it. Bobby gets behind his Minglewood Blues for a shaker that you'll love. But the premier song of this entire show is number 4 in the lineup. Bobby wrote a song with rhythmic trippy sounds. Wow...what a great song and what a great name! Folks I must declare that in this case, the best version of Estimated was the first ever played. Mickey has a skippy symbol beat that isn't found in future versions, and Phil puts down some loud bass notes during the chorus to give this song some depth.

Wow couldn't even get through the first 4 songs without needing to take a break, a refresher. Now that I'm on my way to seeing the prophet himself, I must opine the greatness of the ending of the first set. Playin > Wheel > Playin is simply masterful. For those of you who like the break-neck 1972 Playin' jams, the 1973 jazzy-intermediate Playin' jams, and 1974 mostly jazzy Playin jams, you get a huge dose of trippy Garcia wah wah sounds on this! This is a magical Playin' because the boys actually do coalesce into a furious epileptic seizure 2/3 of the way through. The wheel and the Playin' reprise is brilliant way to end the first set.
Things only get better in the second set. Samson and Jed get our taste buds primed after the intermission, and Garcia gets a hole-in-one with The Music Never Stopped. But how does the band play Help > Slip > Franklin so well after such a long break? Slipknot is especially teasing and really fulfills the empty space in your head from all the pot you just smoked.
But wait, the gig is not nearly over - Eyes of the World is just as solid as a steel bar. Garcia flies like a butterfly in the beginning notes, the song is not played too slow nor too fast (some 1977 versions Eyes are too fast in my opinion) and Phil allows us to melt into Dancin' like butter in a microwave. They pull out Around to get you dancin' and then send us all home with US Blues.
This is most definitely Top 5, and frankly I would not hesitate to put this #1 for the year. I've listened to Eyes of The World only about 85 times it's so good. Just for the record my Top 5 for this year includes

Perosnally, I like the way that this particular version of Terrapin Station sounded compared to later versions; once they worked out the kinks it sounded too flat and slick. This one does have eyes. Take a full listen to the Help on the Way/Slipknot/Franklin's Tower medley as well. Jerry plays one hell of a sick lead during Help on the Way. That is all.

If this is how they kicked off their '77 tour, yeeooww! One awesome & jazzy Playin>Wheel>Playin. The Help>Slipknot!>Franklin is pretty damn good too. In fact, there's not too much about this one to complain about (except the abrupt and early end of Dancin'). Can't have everything I guess.

I was at this show. A little too buzzed to really appreciate this one. I knew this was the 1st terripin and loved it from the start. Prophet was great.

This is my dream show: Tarrapin, Estimated, Playin> Wheel> Playin, Music Never Stopped, Help>Slip>Franklin's, Eyes> Dancin!!!....WOW. But were can i download? not stream. I have listened to this alot and i want it, Got to have it! can anyone help me out??

I had this on tape for years and having down loaded it here a while back it all came around to me that this has always been one of the best shows in my possession.
I was only three years old at the time of the show!
If youre looking for the raw energy and struggle inside the whirlwind of the breakaway after the first verse of Playin
then go no Further. This is what I call the magic inside the storm. Its uncertainty, its out there, its creative, its accurte and experimental.
You can hear the effort to let go and somehow its harnessed and controlled chaos that blends so well together.
Help/Slip/Frank is awesome. This is just a fantastic show all together so dont even hesitate to d/l this show.

When I first got a copy of this show, I found a horrible copy of a sdbrd of the entire show at a friends house. He had a wall of tapes and I would go in and grab 10-20 a week to feed my jones. I chose this show strictly based on the set list, not for any sentimental reason (although I would have given my left..well..you know...to have been at this show) The first time I listened, I got goosebumps. I quickly found a crispy board and continued to listen often to this masterpiece. The bass solo from Eyes to Dancin' is INSANE!!!! The Terrapin opener is no slouch either and sets the tone for one of the jazziest, flowing and intricate performances I have ever had the pleasure to hear. I have since gotten CD copies and after finding it on here again, I have been streaming it daily! I miss the good old days!!! I cannot say enough how much I love this show!!

I dont remember if i got my sbd copy from bittorrent on etree or on the archive. My copy has two extra tracks at the end which are (1.)Scarlet>Fire>(2.)Good Lovin. Does anyone have the same 'bonus' tracks as i do? They're labled gd77-02-26-d306 &...07. Weird, huh? Could it be a soundcheck?

what a show my friends DL this show befor they took it down . the show is pricless in its own way with the first terripan my favorite its pretty normal but the rest of the show is on fire the help/slip/franklin is just beautiful a must listen show and also a early reviewer said to post info on the shows I totaly agree with that some of us where not lucky enough to see the big man do his thing so it is grately appreciated to hear your past times on the archives it gives us some what of a mental picture of what a dead family should be and for that my friends I thank you dearly

Opening with Terrapin you have to love that.The sound so very sweet its a bit of a pity that these shows can't be D/Led but that was the bands choice i guess. Streaming works i reckon if you are lucky enough to have a hi-speed hook-up. I was lucky enough to be able to D/L a what seems like ages ago.
I am willing to do a few B&Ps if any one interested. I should tell ya i live in Canada that can complicate things a bit, but i'm sure it can be worked out.

Sound Quality 5.0; Show Quality 5.0. First Terrapin and one of the best....I don't say that lightly !!

I was prompted to listen to this show again after reading an interview with Bobby from 1977 in Conversations with the Dead by David Gans. Bob refers to this show (with a few others) and the time when they were still ironing out the Terrapin Station material before recording and releasing it. You can tell that this first Terrapin is a little rough, but I amazed on how beautiful it really is. They had already spent a lot of time working on it, so that doesn't surprise me, per se, but usually in such situations, first time played isn't a comment on the old setlist that I jump for joy when I see. This show is a goodie.
And btw, if you would like to DL the _vbr.mp3 files for any streaming show, you can do as another reviewer mentioned, or if you use Firefox, right click the m3u file when it downloads in the download manager, select properties and get the specific FTP server address. Then using an FTP client, you can download the show. This method, depending on your connection, is a little faster.

Man I wish I could've been alive to see this concert, the sound quality of this recording is impecable. I love how they start with Terrapin. Sick Minglewood, check out New Minglewood at Nassau Colliseum 5/6/87, Brent is on fire! But regarding to this show in San Bernardino, much energy on every song, a definite must listen.Great version of Prophet. This whole show is fuckin amazing. Bobby's vocals definitely stand out among other performances. Probably one of the best shows I've heard from GD.

This is Boss, The master plan and then some. Like the Professer said on his review of the Rob gym shows in Santa Barbara you have to refer to this (2/26-27) as the program the structure for the white hot Spring tour in May to come. The band is just rollin' be it slow or fast kind of a clicking along. So smooth in synce and beatiful.
The june Winterland shows 6th through 9th are my favorit. I pull it out more often than alot of other 77 stuff. This is obviously coming the heels of a very high time everyone from the band to the fans knew this was a peek and good times for the music and scene. Talk about family and old school and all that kind shit this was it. After month of May the band got about a week off and played a show at the Forum in LA. Then a 3 night run was booked at the Winterland. Those shows are the culmination of the previous month the new songs, old bust outs and the high groove they were on. Thats so sick, The bands having a blast fans are are going bonkers and there returning home to the Winterland to show its fans whats been going down and they crush it. The music from this tour is so fluid timing,jamming,solos and singing all flow so nicely like orange sunshine on a breezy
psychedelic spring day.

Perfect sound

It is a crime that great shows like this one are no longer available for free download. Making the shows available in streaming format was a good shot toward trying to compromise, but there is still one huge problem. What becomes of those of us with dial-up who can't stream music without it stopping every 10 seconds or so to buffer? We just get left out in the cold while others continue to enjoy this incredible music.

So many great sounds, here, still 76 in my mind, but ovcourse major turn with Terrapin and estimated, worth notin', quality eyes, and great playin>wheel>playin, they were in no rush to exit, good minglewood

I had a tape of this show for years but it never sounded this good.

First performances usually lack the maturity that comes after being on the road for a while, but the first Terrapin and Estimated Profit here are strong, crisp, and played with feeling. Playin'->Wheel->Playin' is the Dead at their best, and deserves a spot in any compilation. Help->Slipknot grabs you and pulls you along as it smoothly weaves in and out of different zones.
Then the show seems to lose steam. Franklins Tower gets repetitive towards the end, and the band seems to run out of ideas after that. There are much better Eyes in previous 4 years, and better Scarlet->Fires later in the year.

Had this show for years. Why I didn't comment sooner????This site and all it's options, that's why. I'll keep it short...top 5 of this year. The Early May east coast run and this show. Put them in whatever order you want. I don't haver the strength to get into that winless debate.Just download and you'll be in everyone's good graces. amazing

another 77 gem.... go ahead and find a show from 77 that doesn't rock your socks off... i dare you!!!!!!!!! i've never heard them play so tight in my life.... the intensity of this music is unreal.... keith is awake, and hammering the keys.... jerry is on another level.... absolutely ripping it up... bobby's belting out the vocals in minglewood like i've never seen... unreal... is it just me, or does the sound quality on scarlet-fire, and good lovin differ from the rest of the show? nevertheless.. it's still great.. get it now!!!!

I dont know.... But when I hear this terrapin/mingle it makes me suddenly realize that there IS something cosmic and grandiose which eminates from this music...making it okay that it defined a huge part of my youth. five thousand stars man, nothing will ever get this good.

This IS the first live performance of Terrapin Station! And it is sizzling...especially Jerry's attack on the solo...it really has more of a sort of aggressive feeling than he would develop in the months to come.
This show is all around bad ass! I enjoy listening to it equally as much as 5/8/77 and any other May 1977 show. PITB>The Wheel>PITB is really special this night! I highly recommend this show to all deadheads. And sound quality is brilliant! I have to mention that this may be the best I've ever heard Keith play! Especially on Terrapin..he is perfect!

There was no Scarlet>Fire at this show. Infact, there was neither played. 3/18/77 was the first time they ever played the combo.

Ok, first off, this show kills 5-8-77. The same songs are hotter at this show (Deal, TLEO )and the Minglewood is the best I've heard. Now I'm a big Estimated fan and this is Number 1 or 2 (8-12-79). I wish Jerry's solo would have been longer, but Keith tripping out on the keys is what makes this one so special.
Phil is nuts on the Help>Slip>Frank. And I'm not that big a fan of the later Dancin's, but this is my second favorite version behind 6-14-76.
Finally, U.S. Blues is the way to end a show like this, not the way they ended Cornell.
I just came off a road trip. I listened to this show and 5-8 back to back. And afterward I couldn't believe there was even a comparison.
Oops forgot the perfect Terrapin opener! Now my thoughts on this song are that it only got worse over time because it really didn't lend itself to improv as much. Jerry just got sloppy over the years, but this is absolutely perfect and it's the icing on the cake.
NO! the real icing is the perfect sound quality of this download!
Bottom Line: Number 1 download in my book. Now check out 4-29-71.

That sounds a lot like the Barton Hall 5/8/77 Scarlet>Fire to me. That Good Lovin' sounds familiar too, can't place it though. Otherwise, I agree, this is a great show! I've only heard poor quality tapes of it and this is very nice!!! Thank you.

It's a tough call. On the one hand, I think this is the best Help>Slipknot!>Franklin's, which isn't on Barton. But on the other, Barton has the most kickin' Scarlet>Fire, while this doesn't have one worth comparisson. Deal is bouncin', Eyes is phenominal, and of course, the FIRST TERRAPIN EVER PLAYED...TO PERFECTION! I think for now, I'll have to give my vote to the Swing over Barton.

...and I can't add a thing. I was so blown away by the opening Terrapin that it took me a few listens to realize that New Minglewood was beyond belief. Were they actually played at this show? I grabbed this, but in a search for artwork the last two tracks don't show up...and if you look at the other version of this show (SBD) they are not on it...is this a mistake on this post?

This is practically a perfect show. The only flaw about it has more to do with my own personal distaste for the 1977 disco version of "Dancin In The Street" that I just can never get into. Beyond that, this show is as close to perfection as you can get both in sound and performance. Download immediately!

This show truly deserves its five-star rating. The sound quality is pristine. Everything is well balanced and the separation between the instruments and the audibility of the vocals is astounding. Not only is the sound amazing but the performance is spectacular. TMNS and Samson are personal favorites of mine from this show. And, as an unexpected bonus, there is no Drums/Space to be found anywhere on this download. What a relief!!

Wow. until this download I've never heard the Dead rock with so much energy. You can really feel the tightness of the jams on a good stereo system. Sugaree sounds like gold, as does New Minglewood Blues. Terrapin is cool, kind of ends early though. I keep skipping to Sugaree, man that is so good in this show!

I have been searching for this show for a little while. Two breakouts this night with Terrapin and E Prophet, which needless to say are Dead Classics. 77 was an incredible run and this was surely an amazing show to kick it off.

Because the Dead just stole it! I'm new to the world of Dead shows, having only 2 cd's of theirs previous to stumbling onto this magnificent archive. BIG thank you's to those who maintain this site, long may it live! I've now aquired 30 shows, trying to get a few from each of the years '65 to 80's, and I have to say this one is a standout performance. The sound quality is among the best i've heard so far, amazing! The opener Terrapin Station is absolutely beautiful!! NMB smokes and by the time they hit Estimated prepare to be searching for your face. Crank those speakers and feel the bass! Wondering where to start like i was? My advice is start with the most popular page and go from there. This show is one for the ages and I highly suggest that after you read this you get it! :) Awesome stuff!!!!!

I am on the first song and I am already impressed! what a great band! I am right now reading Phil's book, and I have a greater appreciation for what they did.

I can't argue the fact that this might be one of the best five shows ever.....and at the same time, it may not be in my five favorite of 1977. What a great show and a great era. First versions of "Terrapin" and "Estimated Prophet". Classic 1977 show full of great surprises in almost every song......a great recording too.

This is one the five best Dead shows ever! Right up there w/Ithaca, Fillmore '69, and San Rafael '83, and this show from '74 whose venue I forgot. It's just amazing! The Spring '77 run was their best run ever! This recording sounds much better than the one I have from a cassette source. Enjoy!

This show has one of the best sound mixes. It's not ideal for every show but it works really well for this especially since it's like Phil is the lead. Brother is on top of his game this night. At he very least peep: estimated prophet, deal, help-slip-franklins and music never stopped. Oh yeah I almost forgotthe playin jams are absolutely ridiculous. Booyakasha

This is the show that got me into the Grateful Dead. I've always really liked them, but when I downloaded this show and heard it, I became addicted. The sound quality of this show is awesome, but even if the sound was crappy this show would groove. The Grateful Dead are liquid smooth throughout the entire show, not slacking on any song. Plus this features the first Terrapin Station, if I'm not mistaken. The jams are incredible. Stop reading this review and download this show.

truely awe inspiring playing. i cant imagine there being any other group of people with such a cosmic kinship. this show is so hot it will give you blisters. pick any song, it doesnt matter, they are all played with such power and precision. jerry turns every note into a rain drop, and the end result is like standin in a monsoon. franklins tower is especially good. the first couple notes just gave me chlls up my spine. and the sound quality of this show is so good that even in mp3 it sounds GREAT. get this show. its the best ive ever heard. if this show doesnt turn you into a life long deadhead, nothing will

If anyone ever asks you this, or if you ever want to demonstrate in full the versatility of this band, this is the perfect show to play or suggest to them. It has ALL of what makes the GD epic. The songs are tight and loose at the same time. Liquid jams, great melodies and lyrics. This song has the rock in roll, the jazzy psychedlia, the folk and the country blues. The show is so incredibley well rounded with its playing and song selection. One of the absolute best.

If you like the mid -> late 70's stuff, this show is a must-have! Quality is pretty decent. Listened to the whole show last night and I haven't jammed that hard in years. Whoever got this site together deserves a huge thank you! This is the coolest thing to happen to live music in my lifetime.

The scarlet>fire on this download sounds like 5/5/77 because it IS 5/5/77. For some reason its on here as a filler (a pretty good filler, I might add). Anyway, on to this show. A must have if for no other reason than the historical significance, offering up the first Terrapin and Estimated. I also like the Wheel sandwiched between Playing in the Band

I was just listening to a different Dead show, specifically 5/5/77 show at New Haven. (This show is featured on Nugs.net) and I've noticed that the Scarlet Begonias > Fire on the Mountain > Good Lovin' that is on that show is IDENTICAL to the one posted here. Also, after thinking this was true, I added up the total time of all 3 songs, and they are only about 10 seconds difference. I may be wrong about this, so check it out for yourself: www.nugs.net has it in the "downloads" section. Also, this provides an answer to the previous "apocryphal Scarlet Fire?" post. I've been an avid tape trader for about 10 years. I've heard around 50% of all live shows. I must say that this is one of the finest displays of musical tapestry I've ever heard woven. This is my first review and I'm writing simply because if youre looking for a display of Dead genius you needent look further. Hope you enjoy like I have. Keep an eye open for my reviews. Ok, first things first- sound quality is excellent. Don't be the slightest worried about that. Ok, now to the show... AMAZING!!!!!! Definitely should be downloaded. First Terrapin and Estimated, and both are well played. Damn, that would be sweet to see these two tunes played for the first time, especially Terrapin... at least we can listen to played for the first time 30 years later... The rest of the show is awesome, too. I like the Minglewood Blues, with a cool little intro(albeit one that lasts about 5 seconds). Good first set. Second set is sweet too. The H>S>FT is good, but I would much prefer any from May/June/Oct. of this same year. The real treat is the Eyes>Dancin', where, as previously mentioned, Phil does some sweet stuff with the bass, and Keith makes the transition perfect. Nice U.S. Blues encore, and the filler is good too. The first Scarlet>Fire I've heard that rivals the Cornell one, but still falls a wee-bit short. All in all, download this show.

Tight show all around, the boys were really on that night. I love the Help>Slipknot>Franklins. Phil's bass solo between Eyes and Dancin is hot. Amazing quality sound. The 5/8/77 show was one of the best of that year, but this one is right up there as well.

My understanding is that Fire didn't debut till later this year... I did read a review once, maybe of 5-8-77, speaking of the "first" scarlet Fire at Swing. Mayhap this is the source of that (apparent) rumor- Deadlists.com agrees with me on the no S>F point... So I wonder where this is from, and if this Samson is the apocryphal (and crazy smokin') Samson I heard on my first 2 copies of 5-8-77, i guess as a filler, at the end of side A, set II.
Oh yeah- as for the show, what can I say? A classic. This source sound better to me than the other available. Do it now!

This show speaks for it self. The sound quality is amazing and both sets are well played. The Sugaree is one of my favorites next to 5-19-77.

This is probably my favorite show i have downloaded from this website. Absolutely amazing sound quality...Phil's bass roars. The entire band is in complete sync like i've never heard before. Terrapin station...is absolutely ethereal. Never heard a better one. The transition from Scarlet Begonias into Fire on the Mountain leads me to believe this band was from an alternate universe. This is truly music from Gods.

Was walking out when the security told me if I went out I could not come back in. You mean there was going to be more. Place was packed with hells angels. Rick griffin had this backdrop called the impearl massager. And you get to hear the first Taripin and estimated.

this song was played at my first show[6.25.88].I have always thought that this was the Real Dead sound,slow,mellow,and dark,with a ever rising end that gets better every run down.Can you imagine being there for the first time Jer sings 'INSPIRATION....'? Move me brightly this song has for years.This show is like a good Cabarnet from France,gets better the more crap music comes out. I'll tell you why. This is a tremendous show for many reasons....the first ever Estimated and Terrapin complete with Keith's new keyboard sound.....a complete meltdown during Playin>Wheel>Playin to close out set 1.....and what about a flawless Help>Slip>Franklin's that has Jerry reaching for the heavens.
But what makes this a 5 star show is the Eyes>Dancin' towards the end of set 2. The transistion between these 2 songs is so sweet. Phil thumps along for a minute or two and then before you know it, Jerry dials in the Wah-Wah and off we go. Like another reviewer put it, this Dancin' ROCKS! The ending chord progressions Jerry plays is some of his finest. To end this show with Around and US Blues is a crime!

any critics of the disco-dead needs a careful listen to the dancin' in this show. while so many dancin's in '77 seem to wobble along cheerfully without climax, this one seriously smokes - jerry's wah solo is pure fireworks.

it's the birth of Terrapin Station, and the Arista Dead as we know it. Show from early 1977 and even though there was still 10 month left of the year, it was on top of the heap.

Damn this show sizzles. I think that has been said enough in the other reviews here. Does anyone know what show the scarlet>fire and good lovin are from? Just curious because they sound pretty good as well (sometimes I like it when Jerry 'screws up' the singing)

This show is amazing. Everything everyone else said is true and more. Great sound, great energy and lots of crisp, fat phil. Inspired playing from start to finish make this show a must have. download it.

What an energetic and powerful Help/Slipknot. They kept climbing up the laddar, and never looked back. Great example of why I will forever enjoy the Dead.
Some really delightful teases of China Cat in Franklins calm the tension from slipknot...Peace on Earth.

Others have said this, but I have to put my two cents in. If for nothing else, get this song for the first (and one of the best) Terrapin. Garcia seems willing to explore much more in the first solo and in the little jam between Lady With a Fan/Terrapin Station. He must've been trying things out before he settled on his standard riffs that you get in all the great May 77 versions. Some might not like it: It's not quite as smooth, the guitars have more of an edge, and Keith seems to be trying out some stuff also, but I find it refreshing to hear something a little different from the same old great versions of Terrapin.

I listened to my tape of this show driving home on memorial day and knew I needed to come and download the whole show. Opening up with Terrapin Station (the first) is fantastic and the show never lets down. My favorite part of this show is the H>S>F. Roll away, the Dew!!!!! This show can make you forget about that over-rated month of May.

I thought at fist this show wouldn`t be that good, but it`s not good, IT`S GREAT. I have to give credit to Phil for dropping some mad bass lins during " Terrapin Station ", " Est. Prophet ", and " The Deal", on set one. It is a first Terrapin and Estimatd. I`m really stuck on set one, just cause of the set list is great. Check out Phil cause he was on fire the whole show. Jerry does a great solo on " The Deal". One more highlight is Samson and Delilah. Get the show for the Terrapin, Est. Prohpeht, Band>Wheel>Band, Deal and S nd D.

One of the best shows of 77 was also its first. If the first Terrapin, the first Estimated, the jammin' Playin>Wheel>Playin, the bombs Phil drops in the Eyes>Dancin jam, or the Help>Slip>Franklins don't blow your mind, then get this show for the beautiful Keith solo in TLEO.
